Just because you prefer lying on the couch to hiking and biking doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the company of a dog. While all dogs need exercise of some sort, there are certain breeds that would rather cuddle up and watch Animal Planet than chase after a Frisbee. If a laid back dog sounds like the pup for you, here are my top five breeds for couch potatoes.
1. English Bulldogs: Because of their short muzzle and common breathing problems, most bulldogs will tire easily after just a short walk. These are indoor dogs that do well in apartments and do not need a yard. With the right owner and training, bulldogs are generally sweet, gently and funny. Find a reputable breeder though, as bulldogs tend to be prone to health problems.
2. Chihuahuas: They’re tiny and you can carry them around in a purse. Throw a Chihuahua an interesting toy every once in awhile and they will be happy. A short daily walk will probably be enough for this breed, despite their energetic nature.
3. Greyhounds: Despite their reputation as racing dogs, greyhounds are couch potatoes. Sure, they need a good run or walk every day, but once you get them home, they will probably quietly sit at your feet and nap. Consider adopting a greyhound from one of the many racing greyhound rescue organizations!
4. Neapolitan Mastiffs: You’ll need space for this giant breed, but the Neapolitan mastiff has often been called a 200 pound lap dog. Sure they are powerful and intimidating, but they love lounging and adult Neos prefer snoozing around their owners to running after a ball.
5. Basset Hounds: This calm, lazy breed was originally bred as a pack hunting dog, so they love being around people and other dogs. They are generally loyal and friendly, but because of their laziness around the house, they can easily become obese, so make sure they get some regular exercise.
Of course, every dog is different depending on the age, history and owner. Research which dog is going to fit best into your life before making any big decisions, and next time I’ll get you the top five breeds for active people.
