All dogs differ in temperament. Whlle there are good and bad dogs in every breed, some breeds are known to be better with children. When choosing a dog for your family, it is important to take several things into consideration. Family dogs should be tolerant of roughhousing. They should be patient if a child is tugging on an ear, or pulling on a leash. Breeds that are good with children are friendly, calm, and do not startle or anger easily. They are not territorial or high-energy dogs. Below are five of the top breeds of dogs for children and their families.

Golden Retrievers

Golden retrievers are the second most popular dog in America, according to the American Kennel Club. These dogs love to be outdoors and are extremely loyal to their families. Patient, loving and kind, they need to be groomed daily because of their wonderful coat of fur.

Schnauzer

Schnauzers bond well with family members and adore being around humans. They are protective of their families and need to be with them, not locked up in the backyard. They also need regular exercise and are quite smart. They are easy to train because they are so eager to please their owners.

Collies

Collies are intelligent, gentle, and easygoing. They will tolerate a child pulling on their plumed tail with friendly amusement, and they are easily trained, allowing your child to play a game of fetch or take the dog on a walk within a day or two of bringing her home. They sometimes bark quite a bit, however.

Labrador Retrievers

The Labrador Retriever has been the most popular dog in America for five years, according to the American Kennel Club. Labrador Retrievers, or labs as they are more commonly called, are good with children. Patient, playful and protective, they love the water and are great camping and hiking companions. They are also large breeds and need room to run.

Beagles

Beagles are happy, flexible dogs. Their smaller size allows then to interact easier with small children without knocking them over, and they are easygoing and friendly. They are also highly adaptable, which is a plus if your family is always on the move.
