Many dog traits are inherited, but there are certain breeds that have a history of being very family friendly. They love people, like to socialize and think of the family as their own. Properly trained, any one of these breeds would make a welcome addition to the family.
Golden Retriever
Golden retrievers are fun loving and will play until the drop. They do need a big yard to run around in. Goldens are easily trained and like to please their masters. Golden Retrievers can grow to 21 to 24 inches in height and weigh between 50 to 80 pounds, but they are as gentle as they are large. Golden Retrievers have one trait in particular that makes them a good family pet. They do not become attached to just one person. They will treat the whole family the same and love to spend time with everyone, including visitors.
Bichon Frise
A Bichon Frise looks like a powder puff with legs. They love to play and their small size, between 9 1/2 and 11 1/2 inches tall and 10 to 18 pounds make a Bichon a perfect apartment dog. They are active and do need to be taken for regular walks. A Bichon Frise has one thing in common with a poodle. They do not shed their hair and need to be groomed on a regular basis. This is one reason why they are a good breed for anyone with allergies. They are cheerful, happy, gentle and affectionate.
Scottish Collie
The Scottish Collie is the Lassie collie. They are a herding breed and can try to take over the rule of the family just like they would do a herd of sheep. It is just their nature. However, with proper training and an owner who lays down the law, they do very well. A collie is protective of his family and a good watch dog. Again, this goes back to the days of protecting his flock. They grow to between 22 to 24 inches high and weigh between 50 to 75 pounds. A collie does need to have its coat brushed daily. They can live in an apartment, but do best when they have at least a little space to run around. Collies get along with other animals but can be standoffish with strange people, which is one reason why they are considered so protective.
American Cocker Spaniel
The American Cocker Spaniel is a small/ medium size dog which varies from 14 1/2 to 15 1/2 inches in height and weighs between 15 to 30 pounds. Their coat needs to be brushed daily, and they need to go for a trim on a regular schedule. They are known not to bite, are gentle, loyal and smart.
