Overview
According to the American Veterinary Association (AVMA) the healthiest dog foods are made of 40 percent meat, 50 percent vegetables and 10 percent grain. When analyzed, most dog foods from the grocery story were over 70 percent corn. Recent studies have also shown that these same dog foods use chemicals to preserve them, known as carcinogens. When reading the label on the back of you pet food, look for meat to be at the top of the ingredient list. The first five ingredients in your dog food should be things you recognize, instead of chemicals with names you can't pronounce.
Organic dog food
By going organic you can be sure that you're cutting out those cancer-causing chemicals. Just because a label says organic, which of course sounds healthy, doesn't mean that it's necessarily the best choice. It's always a good idea to read the back of the labels before feeding anything to your pet. At the top of veterinarian recommended organic brands is Newman's Own Organics. Next on the AVMA recommended organic brands is Karma Organic, which according to its website, it even uses free-range chicken in its kibble.
Dry foods
Innova EVO brand dog food comes up not only on veterinarian healthiest list but also on consumers. According to DogFoodAnalysis.com and dog owner reviews Innova EVO was across the board one of the most well-liked dry foods by dogs. Innova EVO is rich in lean protein, made from turkey and chicken, which explains why dogs seem to like it so much.
Wet foods
Eagle Pack Duck and Chicken Formula, made from chicken broth and duck meat, has been a favorite among vets, dogs and dog owner. Eagle Pack Duck and Chicken Formula comes in an oxygen tight sealed bag and is completely preservative free. That means any leftovers must be refrigerated and eaten within 48 hours. This could make you wonder why your other pet food lasts so long?
Raw foods
Sometimes, homemade foods are the healthiest. Raw giblets, livers, chicken neck fat and odds and ends from the butcher, mixed with uncooked rice, are healthy and natural foods to feed your dog. Raw eggs and potatoes are another favorite among raw dog foodies. Eating raw is very similar to what their diet would be like in the wild and safe for dogs with food allergies. However, a raw diet can be very rich for your pet if it has never eaten raw meat before. You need to consult your veterinarian before putting your dog on a completely raw diet.
Back to basics
The Veterinarian top-rated dog foods were the most basic. California Natural Lamb Meal & Rice, Wellness Lamb, Super5Mix and Timberwolf were some brands among the top rated. These brands all some things in common, their preservative free and come very close to the 40 percent meat, 50 percent veggies and 10 percent grain ratio. The first five ingredients can all be pronounced, such as meat, fish, rice, whole grain and eggs. If you read the back of your dog food label and don't see anything you would eat, there's a good chance your dog shouldn't eat it, either.
