Overview
All dog breeds have health problems. In some cases, the problems can be eliminated through good veterinarian care and/or selective breeding. However, because of the wide range of health problems that are common in dogs, it is a good idea to be familiar with some of the most common problems your dog may suffer from during its life.
Dermatological Problems
Many breeds have dry skin. Bully breeds and Chihuahuas are among these. Mild forms of skin problems don't cause much of a problem. However, extremely dry skin may cause a dog to scratch or bite the affected area until it breaks the skin. Infection can set in to these areas quickly. Washing the dog in a natural, oatmeal-based shampoo can help. Some of these conditions warrant a trip to the veterinarian for topical medications. In some cases, adding boiled chicken to the diet will help the skin. Dog owners considering this option should contact the veterinarian for advice.
Hip Dysplasia
Hip dysplasia, which is common among large-breed dogs such as Rottweilers, is a hereditary condition that is associated with every breed. In this condition, the dog's hip joints don't form normally. This can cause severe pain, and in some cases, paralysis of the back legs. As a dog with this condition ages, the bones in the affected area wear down, or degenerate. This causes mobility problems and increases the chance of the dog suffering from arthritis.
Cataracts
This is the most common eye problem in dogs, including Yorkies. Cataracts affect the vision of the dog and lead to blindness. Some dogs, such as French bulldogs, are more prone to this condition because of the dog's short tear ducts, which may not produce enough tears to keep eyes fully lubricated.
Auditory Troubles
Breeds with short ear canals, including Dalmatians, Collies and English Setters, are prone to auditory problems. In young puppies, these problems may be mistaken for stubbornness because the dog doesn't come when called. However, as the dog gets older, it becomes more obvious that the dog is having difficulty hearing. There aren't any tests that the veterinarian can perform to confirm the hearing difficulties. Most of the time, the diagnosis is based solely on the observation of the owner.
Metabolic Conditions
Metabolic conditions, such as Cushing's Disease and diabetes, can affect any dog breed. However, German shepherds, poodles, boxers and dogs under 45 lbs. are predisposed to these conditions. Most of these diseases have common symptoms associated with them. Some of these symptoms are excessive thirst, lethargy, excessive urination, frequent infections and an increased appetite. These conditions are treated with medication and/or surgery.
