Overview

home remedies dog ear infections : Overview : Dog
A dog can get ear infections just like a human. These ear infections can be quite painful. If your dog has one, you may notice him scratching at the infected ear with his paw. He may also cry or whine without any other explanation. If this occurs, there are some home remedies that you can use to clear up your dog's ears.

Step 1

Fill a child's sock with rice. Tie the end of the sock shut with a rubber band. Place the sock in the microwave for 30 seconds at a time until it becomes hot, but not so hot that it would burn. Place the hot sock against your dog's ear and hold it in place until it no longer remains hot. A hot compress often works to reduce inflammation and pain.

Step 2

Use a medicine dropper to place two drops of cod liver oil in the ear with the infection. You may want to do this twice per day until your dog begins to feel better.

Step 3

Buy a product called Zymox (see Resources for a link). Zymox comes with or without hydrocortisone which helps with the pain of the ear infections. Drip the Zymox into your dog's ear canal. You want to be liberal with it. You will need to do it once per day for seven days. If your dog's ears were really bad, continue for a total of two weeks.

Step 4

Use Neem oil. You can get it at most plant stores. Apply the Neem oil to your dog's infected ear canal with a medicine dropper. You can be generous with the oil. Try to apply the oil before the dog goes to bed so that it can remain overnight. Use a cotton ball to wipe any excess Neem oil from the ear. Apply once per day for three to four days and the ear infection should clear up.

Step 5

Combine an equal amount of tablespoons of olive oil and milk. Warm it up in a microwave, but don't make hot. Use a medicine dropper to drip four drops in the infected ear. Do this each hour for a day or two. Always apply warm, but not hot.

TIPS AND WARNINGS

  • TIP : If you don't have rice and a sock, you can use hot water and a small hand towel. Clean your dog's ears regularly to prevent them from getting ear infections in the first place.
  • WARNING : A bad diet can cause an ear infection. Change your dog's diet to rice and lamb dog food.
