Overview
Dogs can get itchy skin just as humans get itchy skin. You may not want to take your dog to the vet over every little ailment, especially when there are home remedies you can try first. You can make a home remedy if your dog is suffering from an itch due to an insect bite, dry skin conditions or an allergy.
Step 1
Fill your bathtub partway with lukewarm water, so that it is half as tall as your dog. Add 1/2 a packet of Aveeno Soothing Bath Treatment to the bathwater while it is filling up. This will help with itching that is caused from an allergy. Leave the dog in the bathtub for 10 minutes.
Step 2
Change your dog's diet to get more omega-3-enriched food that also contains fish oil. If you can't find the right dog food, you can buy fish oil and apply it to your dog's food yourself. This diet alone can alleviate the itching by keeping your dog's skin moisturized from the inside out. Life's Abundance dog food (see Resources) is all natural and contains both omega-3 and fish oil.
Step 3
Pour 1 cup apple cider vinegar in an empty spray bottle and then add 1 cup of water. Screw the lid back on and shake to mix the two ingredients together. Spray on the dog's fur and allow it to dry on the dog naturally. This will relieve the itching and can even heal the dry skin that causes the itching.
Step 4
Heat up 1 cup of water in your microwave and then add a teabag. Let it sit. Take another cup and pour in 1 tsp. rubbing alcohol. Drop in two aspirins (use aspirin, not Tylenol or Advil). Wait 10 to 15 minutes, and then combine the two cups. Apply this mixture with a cotton ball to your dog's skin in the spots that he is itching.
Step 5
Mix 1 tsp. baking soda with 1/4 cup water. This mixture will relieve any itching that is due to an insect bite. Apply the mixture directly on the bite and allow to sit. Reapply when the itching comes back.
TIPS AND WARNINGS
- TIP : Brush your dog's fur regularly to stimulate its natural oil production. This will cut down on the dry skin that causes your dog's itching.
- WARNING : If your dog's skin is red, cut or diseased in any way, take him to a vet for proper diagnosis and care. Don't apply any home remedies in this situation because you can make the dog's condition worse.
