Overview
Ear infections can be extremely painful for dogs. They can also become a chronic problem if you don't treat them right away. There are some home remedies you can try and if they don't work, your vet will be able to give you some prescriptions. Once your dog is healed of the ear infection, you can begin a routine cleaning of the ears and ear canals as prevention.
Step 1
Look for symptoms of an ear infection in your dog. These include scratching an ear or both ears with a paw, rubbing the ear against a carpet, whining or crying as if in pain, laying around more than usual, and possibly a fever. Your dog may also not let you touch his ear when you go to look in it, as ear infections make the ear sore to the touch.
Step 2
Change your dog's diet. A poor diet can often cause ear infections. When the diet is changed, the ear infections clear up. Feed your dog a rice and lamb dog food. You can also give him deer meet.
Step 3
Purchase a product called Zymox (see Resources). Zymox is used to cure ear infections. You drip several drops in to each ear canal that is infected. You do this once per day for up to two weeks. You can buy the Zymox with a hydrocortisone in it which will give your dog some relief from the pain of the ear infection.
Step 4
Combine 2 tbs. of milk and 2 tbs. of olive oil in a bowl. Heat to warm in a microwave. It is important that you make sure this mixture is not hot or it will burn your dog. Drip four drips of this combination in to your dog's infected ear canal. Repeat every hour for two to three days. Your dog should be completely healed.
Step 5
Get antibiotics from the vet. Sometimes you can't cure ear infections on your own and you need a doggy doctor to help. Your doctor can prescribe antibiotics as well as some ear drops that will numb the pain. Follow the doctor's instructions and use the antibiotics until they are all gone.
Step 6
Let a few cloves of garlic sit in a bowl of olive oil overnight. Take the garlic out and drip four drops in your dog's infected ears twice per day until your dog begins to improve.
TIPS AND WARNINGS
- TIP : Clean your dogs ears regularly so that your dog doesn't become susceptible to further ear infections.
Give your dog K-9 aspirin for the pain.
Feed your dog 2 tbs. of yogurt per day if you think the ear infection is caused by yeast.
- WARNING : Stay away from a product called Rimadyl even if your vet recommends it. It is not good and has a high death rate.
