Overview

indoor dog potty training : Overview : Dog
If you live in an upstairs apartment, you may not be able to easily take your dog outside every time it has to go to the bathroom. You will want to train your dog to go to the bathroom inside. Give yourself at least seven days to train your dog. That means you must have someone who can be with the dog at all times during the week. Once the dog learns to be indoor potty trained, you won't have to be with it all the time.

Step 1

Purchase a WizDog Indoor Potty. Slide newspapers underneath and then fit the plastic grate over top. The plastic grate protects your dog from stepping in its own urine and tracking that urine throughout the house.

Step 2

Find out where you want to place your potty. It should be an area easily accessed by your dog, but away from common areas such as the living room and the kitchen.

Step 3

Take your dog to the indoor potty first thing in the morning. Do this before you do anything else. Keep the dog on the potty until it goes to the bathroom. This may take a while the first few days, but your dog will catch on pretty quick and go right away later on.

Step 4

Give your dog treats as soon as he goes on the potty. Praise the dog and give the dog plenty of attention. This is needed during the training week so that the dog associates going on the potty with something that pleases his owner.

Step 5

Turn your back on your dog if it has an accident. Don't speak to the dog or look the dog in the eye. This will let the dog know that what he did was not pleasing to you. Since dogs seek to please their owners, they will stop doing this.

Step 6

Take the dog to the potty after each of his meals. This is a crucial time. Most dogs will need to go after each meal. Make sure you stay at the potty with the dog until it goes. Again the dog may take a while at first, but eventually the dog will understand that it needs to go to the potty.

Step 7

Remove the dog's water bowl at 7 pm. This will keep the dog from accessing the bowl at night and having to go to the bathroom before morning.

Step 8

Keep an eye out for any signs that the dog has to go to the bathroom. If you notice any, take the dog to the potty as soon as possible. Praise the dog and give her a treat when she goes successfully.

TIPS AND WARNINGS

  • TIP : Dogs under the age of six months are harder to train. You may need to wait until the dog is six months old to begin potty training.
  • WARNING : Never hit your dog or yell at it if it has an accident. This will not teach the dog to use the potty.

I placed my dog in the laundry room with the potty patch for a couple of hours today and she would not use the potty patch. How do I get her to use it?
