Overview

how teach dog bark? : Overview : Dog
If your dog doesn't bark very much or barks too much, you may want to give it a barking lesson. This lesson can teach the dog to bark at the appropriate times. This way your dog can bark to warn you of danger or a stranger approaching. The dog will learn not to bark when you don't want it to bark.

Step 1

Find a squeaky toy that you can use that will cause your dog to bark naturally.

Step 2

Hold the toy in front of the dog and squeeze it or taunt your dog with it until he barks. Make sure you are also saying the word "Bark" at the same time. As soon as he barks, give him the toy and call him a good boy. You want to praise your dog for the bark so that he knows he did the right thing.

Step 3

Take the toy back and repeat Step 2 until the dog barks. Give the dog the toy and praise him again. Keep doing this until the dog recognizes the word "Bark".

Step 4

Put the toy away and give your dog the bark command. If the dog barks, you now want to give her a treat and then praise hjer. This is getting your dog away from focusing on the toy and on to focusing on you.

Step 5

Repeat Step 4 until the dog understands the command bark and does it without fail.

Step 6

Teach your dog not to bark when you don't want him to. Have your child or friend get the dog all riled up until he begins to bark. Now say in a firm tone "Silence." If the dog doesn't stop barking, have everyone walk away and turn their backs on the dog. Eventually the dog will see that its barking isn't pleasing and it will stop.

Step 7

Repeat the command "Silence" each time the dog begins barking. As soon as the dog stops barking at your command, give him a treat. Give him lots of praise too so that he recognizes that he did what you wanted. Continue until your dog masters the command.

TIPS AND WARNINGS

  • TIP : Only train one dog at a time if you have more than one dog. Otherwise, the dogs will fight for your attention and compete with each other instead of focusing on the commands.
  • WARNING : Do not beat your dog or yell at it if it does not do what you command. This will not teach the dog anything. Simply ignoring the dog and turning your back to the dog is enough to get the point across.
