One of my favorite tips was something that I read to help teach your dog to come to you when asked. You take a worn sock and roll it into a ball. It needs to have been worn so that it has your scent on it. Find a relatively small enclosed area where you can have your dog off-leash. Call your dog. If your dog does not come to you, throw and hit your dog with the rolled up sock. The sock won't hurt your dog but if it works your dog will feel it, smell the sock, recognize your scent and come to you. I think it helps your dog to recognize that even when not on a leash, that you will still have the ability to "get" to them. Give it a try and see if it works! Good luck.
